Having children is a blessing that comes with great responsibility
For Fanny Miller having children is a blessing that comes with a great deal of responsibility. However, she believes that the most important key is to know and have absolute faith that they will be ok.
“When we doubt this, we open the door to the possibility of it not being true”. Fanny, President of El Latino, Celebrando Latinas and Celebrando Latinas Magazine enjoys her six children every day, and despite being a very busy woman, she knows the way to always stay very close to them. “For example when we cook everyone participates, I ask them to do one thing or another, they don’t notice that what I’m doing is gathering them to spend time together”. The children of the publisher of San Diego’s most important Spanish-language publications are: Ruben 21, Gabriel 19, Diego 12, Kassandra 12, Esther 9 and Fatima 8.
How did you begin your career in the newspaper?
I began 30 years ago when I was 21, now I am the owner and I do almost everything sales, distribution, publishing and many other things.
What was the hardest thing to do to balance work and motherhood?
When I had my first son I had been the El Latino publisher for 10 years, it was very hard to try to balance everything at the same time. It was also the time when the company had enormous growth, so the hardest thing for me was the guilt I felt for not being with him all the time.
What is the meaning of Mother’s Day for you?
For me Mother’s day is when I most remember my biological mom, she passed away in 2002. Remembering her and always asking her to forgive me for having judged her so harshly, even though I was there for her when she needed me, I am always very aware of how much I would’ve liked to know her better and having had the patience to understand her better.
How do you celebrate?
With all of my children. We go out to eat or the kids cook at home.
Every child is special, what is one quality that defines each of your kids?
I have always wanted my kids to have their own independent way of thinking. From the oldest to the youngest: Ruben is very aware that he is the oldest and that he sets the example for the rest of them; Gabriel likes to cook and is very noble, when he sets a goal he simply achieves it, he is his own motivation; Diego is a very respectful young man, he cares about his personal image to the max. Kassandra is a girl that shows great love and leadership; Esther… well… Esther has a strong character and she lets you know it; Fatima is the baby, she loves to run and is one of the fastest at her school.
How would the perfect celebration be?
One where we are peaceful and enjoying whatever we are doing. It is not the gifts but the moments that make it so special.
What is the most important thing you have taught your children?
I feel that self-respect and to take care of each other. Whatever their dream or goal is, to go after it. We don’t always get opportunities, so we should take them when we do. And to always be grateful.
What message do you want to share with the Celebrando Latinas Magazine readers?
To enjoy Mother’s Day with all its small details, and to not do any work that day, it is important to learn how to receive and teach our children that we too need attention just like them.
Tener hijos una bendición con mucha responsabilidad
Para Fanny Miller tener hijos es una bendición que viene acompañada de mucha responsabilidad. Sin embargo, ella considera que lo más importante es saber y tener fe completa en que ellos (sus hijos) van a estar bien. “Cuando dudamos de esto, damos oportunidad a que no sea así”. Fanny, directora de El Latino, Celebrando Latinas y Celebrando Latinas Magazine disfruta todos los días de sus seis hijos y a pesar de ser una mujer muy ocupada, conoce la forma de mantenerse siempre muy cerca de ellos. “Por ejemplo a la hora de cocinar todos participan, les pido una u otra cosa, no se dan cuenta que lo que estoy haciendo es reunirlos para convivir”. Los hijos de la directora de las publicaciones en español más importantes de San Diego son: Ruben 21, Gabriel 19, Diego 12, Kassandra 12, Esther 9 y Fatima 8.
¿Cómo comenzaste tu carrera en el periódico?
Lo comencé hace 30 años a la edad de 21. Actualmente soy la una propietaria y hago de todo ventas, distribución, editorial entre otras muchas cosas.
¿Qué fue lo más difícil de compaginar el trabajo con ser madre?
Cuando tuve a mi hijo ya tenía 10 años publicando El Latino, fue muy difícil tener que tratar de balancear tanto al mismo tiempo. Cuando tuve mi primer hijo era también en el momento que la compañía estaba teniendo mucho crecimiento. Lo mas difícil es el sentimiento que tenía de culpabilidad de no estar con el todo el tiempo.
¿Qué significado tiene el día de las madres para ti?
Para mi el día de las madres es donde recuerdo más a mi mami biológica ella falleció en el 2002. Recordarla y siempre pedirle perdón por haberla juzgado aunque estuve en lo que me necesitaba, siempre tengo presente que me hubiera gustado conocerla mejor y haber tenido la paciencia para entenderla mejor.
¿Cómo lo celebran?
Con todos mis hijos salimos a comer o cocinan ellos en casa.
¿Cada hijo es especial, una cualidad de cada uno de sus hijos?
Siempre he querido que mis hijos tengan su propia independencia de pensamiento. De mayor a menor son: Ruben tiene presente que es el mayor y es el ejemplo para sus hermanos, Gabriel le gusta cocinar y es no es nada complicado cuando se pone una meta el solo la cumple, el es su propia motivación. Diego es un joven muy respetuoso y cuida de su persona a lo máximo. Kassandra es una niña que demuestra mucho amor y liderazgo. Esther… bueno Esther tiene un carácter fuerte y te lo deja saber. Fátima es la bebé, le gusta correr y es una de las mas rápidas en su escuela.
¿Cómo sería la celebración perfecta?
En donde estemos tranquilos y disfrutar lo que estemos haciendo. No son los regalos son los momentos que lo hacen especial.
¿Qué es lo más importante que les has enseñado a tus hijos?
Siento que el respeto a si mismos, a cuidarse entre ellos. A que sea cual sea su sueño o meta la busquen. Las oportunidades no las tenemos todo el tiempo entonces tomarlas cuando las tienes, y siempre ser agradecidos.

Maria Sahagun: My children are the three greatest blessings God gave me
Not only is Maria Sahagun Director of Local and National Sales for El Latino Newspaper, Celebrando Latinas Magazine and Celebrando Latinas Conference, for Michael, Richard and Elizabeth, Maria is “Mom, Amá and Mami”. Her children, 30, 35 and 39 respectively are “the three greatest blessings God gave me”. When Maria thinks of a celebration to honor Mother’s Day, the first thing that comes to her mind is the moment she first held each one for them in her arms. “It is a very special day, I remember when I had each one of my beautiful children”, she tells us with great emotion. Her eyes shine when she speaks of the qualities they each have, “all three are equally wonderful, with a great heart, loving and excellent parents.”
How did you begin your career in the newspaper?
I have been the Director of National and Local Sales for El Latino Newspaper, Celebrando Latinas Magazine and Celebrando Latinas Conference for the last 15 years.
What was the hardest thing to do to balance work and motherhood?
At that time my daughter was still very small and the hardest thing for me was the time when she was on school break and I didn’t have anyone to leave her with, sometimes I had to take her with me to the office.
What is the meaning of Mother’s Day for you?
The first thing I think about is the moment I first had them in my arms. It is a very special day, I remember when I had each one of my beautiful children, I still get emotional when I think about it, I can’t hide it. All three of them are equally wonderful, with a great heart, loving and excellent parents.
How do you celebrate?
The perfect celebration is with all the family, it doesn’t matter where, what matters is that we are all together. We go out for dinner at a beautiful restaurant or sometimes we opt to gather as a family at home for a barbeque.
What is the most important thing you have taught your children?
The most important thing that I taught them was to have manners, be respectful, honest, hard working, clean and loving.

Mis hijos son las tres bendiciones más grandes que Dios me dió
Maria Sahagun no solamente es gerente de ventas locales y nacionales del periódico El Latino, Celebrando Latinas Magazine y Celebrando Latinas la conferencia, para Michael, Richard y Elizabeth, Maria es “Mom, ama y mami”, sus hijos de 39, 35 y 30 años respectivamente, “ellos son las tres bendiciones más grandes que Dios me dió”.
Cuando Maria piensa en una celebración para festejar el Día de las Madres, lo primero que viene a su mente es el momento en que los tuvo por primera vez entre sus brazos. “Es un día muy especial, recuerdo cuando tuve a cada uno de mis hermosos hijos”, comenta una María emocionada. Los ojos le brillan cuando habla de las cualidades que tienen cada uno de ellos “los tres son igual de maravillosos, con un gran corazón, amorosos y excelentes padres de familia”.

Soy gerente de ventas locales y nacionales del periódico El Latino, Celebrando Latinas Magazine y Celebrando Latinas Conference por los últimos 15 años.
¿Qué fue lo más difícil de compaginar el trabajo con ser madre?
En ese tiempo mi hija estaba chica y para mí lo más difícil fue en el tiempo que ella estaba de vacaciones y no tener con quien dejarla, en ocasiones me la llevaba a la oficina.
¿Qué significado tiene el día de las madres para tí?
Lo primero que viene a mi mente es el momento en que los tuve por primera vez entre mis brazos. Es un día muy especial, recuerdo cuando tuve a cada uno de mis hermosos hijos, todavía me emociona pensarlo, no lo puedo ocultar. Los tres son igual de maravillosos, con un gran corazón, amorosos y excelentes padres de familia.
¿Cómo lo celebran?
La celebración perfecta es todos en familia, no importa el lugar, lo que importa es estar todos juntos. Salimos a comer a un bonito restaurante o en ocasiones optamos por reunimos como familia en casa para hacer una carne asada.
¿Qué es lo más importante que les has enseñado a tus hijos?
Lo más importante que les enseñé fue a ser educados, respetuosos, honestos, trabajadores, limpios y amorosos.

Before and after Leah
As soon as she saw her little head full of curls she knew her life would never be the same. “ I loved her long before I got to know her, I wanted so much to be a mom that there isn’t a single day that I don’t enjoy it,’’ says a very emotional Esperanza Colin who has been part of El Latino for at least 20 years. Esperanza shares with us that motherhood changed her completely and made her understand the very wise words “they tell all of us women, when you have children you will understand”, “now I understand what it means to be patient, to be afraid, to love unconditionally, I understand happiness and sleepless nights and the joys of being a mother”, tells Esperanza as she observes how in the blink of an eye her princess is becoming a happy and successful young lady.
How did you begin your career in El Latino?
I began as a freelancer in binational sales more than 20 years ago, but life changed courses for me and about 5 years ago I reunited with Fanny Miller and since then I share her dream by supporting the company and the Celebrando Latinas Conference.
What was the hardest thing to do to balance work and motherhood?
There were times when I had to leave my daughter with my mom so that I could go to events or on trips, but I would try to bring her with me as much as I could, maybe that’s why she’s so extroverted.
What is the meaning of Mother’s Day for you?
Love, Gratitude and Union.
How do you celebrate?
With all the family, from the grandmother to the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren.
What is the most important thing you have taught your children?
Values, responsibility, honesty and to believe in herself, to follow her dreams and be grateful to God.
What message do you wish to share with the Celebrando Latinas Magazine readers?
For moms with teenagers I invite you to spend more time with them, get to know more about their day to day. They need us even if it doesn’t show. With technology a lot of the in person family bonding has been lost. I invite you to have a mom-and-child day like the old days without cell phones or television. Go out with them, listen to them without judging, enjoy them!
I am sure they will value it. Patience is the key.

Tan pronto miró su cabecita llena de risos supo que su vida ya no sería la misma.
“La quise desde antes de conocerla, añoraba tanto ser mamá qué no hay día que no lo disfrute”, dice llena de felicidad Esperanza Colin quien ha formado parte de El Latino desde hace por lo menos 20 años.

¿Qué fue lo más difícil de compaginar el trabajo con ser madre?
Había veces que la tenía que dejar con mi mamá para yo poder atender eventos o viajes, pero siempre que podía la llevaba conmigo, tal vez por eso es tan extrovertida.

Being a mom was a childhood dream for Jennifer Bustamante
For Jennifer Bustamante, editor and contributor to Celebrando Latinas Magazine, being a mom was a childhood dream. She had many dolls who were all her children. “All I wanted to be, as far as I was concerned, was a mom”. She enjoys each one of her children, “They each have a very unique and different personalities which is hard to see to those who don’t know them because they look so much alike. However, they are all very unique and fun, that is my favorite thing to do as a mom, to discover their individual qualities and quirks every single day”.
How did you begin your career in the newspaper?
All my life I have written, edited and even translated books, articles and assignments. However, it wasn’t until we launched the first edition of Celebrando Latinas Magazine that I fully began my work in journalism- a sweet addiction.
What was the hardest thing to do to balance work and motherhood?
Without a doubt I can say the grueling schedules, long drives and having to leave my children with other people so I can advance in my career.
What is the meaning of Mother’s Day for you?
It is a day of celebration and gratitude! It is the moment when we gain a better understanding of our own moms and their challenges.
How do you celebrate?
That day my children can’t say no to me, so I drag them to the mountains, then we watch movies and we play table games with popcorn, pizza and ice cream.
What is the most important thing you taught your children?
That everything is possible, that we need to be grateful and to help others without judging, to be humble and to work for what they want until they get it.

Jennifer Bustamante: Ser mamá, un sueño desde niña
Para Jennifer Bustamante, editora y colaboradora de la revista Celebrando Latinas Magazine, ser mamá ha sido su sueño desde niña. Nos cuenta que tenía muchos muñecos que todas eran sus hijos. “Lo único que yo quer ser de grande era ser mama”. Ella disfruta a cada uno de sus hijos, “ Cada uno de ellos tiene es único y con personalidades muy diferentes, lo cual es difícil de ver para aquellos que no los conocen ya que son físicamente muy parecidos. Sin embargo, los tres son únicos y divertidos, eso es lo que más disfruto de ser mamá, descubrir a diario sus cualidades individuales y sus locuras.
¿Cómo empezaste tú carrera en el periódico?
Toda mi vida he escrito, editado y hasta traducido libros, artículos y notas. Sin embargo, fué cuando lanzamos la primera edición de Celebrando Latinas Magazine que empecé de lleno con el periodismo- una linda adicción.
¿Qué fue lo más difícil de compaginar el trabajo con ser madre?
Sin duda alguna los horarios, manejar largas horas, y tener que dejar a mis hijos con otras personas para poder avanzar en mi carrera.
¿Qué significado tiene el día de las madres para tí?
Es un día de celebración y agradecimiento! Es el momento en que entendemos a nuestras propias madres y sus retos.
¿Cómo lo celebran?
Es el día que mis hijos no me pueden decir que no, así que los arrastro a las montañas, luego vemos películas y jugamos juegos de mesa con palomitas de maíz, pizza y helado.
¿Qué es lo más importante que les has enseñado a tus hijos?
Que todo es posible, que debemos ser agradecidos y ayudar a los demás sin juzgar, a ser nobles y trabajar por lo que quieren hasta conseguirlo.

Mothers Day: “The most powerful day in the universe”
“I come from a mother that has been everything for me”, says Pamela Smith, the voice on the other side of the phone at El Latino, with that positive energy that characterizes her, “Mother’s Day is the most powerful day in the universe” and that is how she celebrates it. Pamela is in charge of the Classified ads and is a sales representative for over 18 years. Pamela is the happy mother to three children, Matthew, Max and Mercy, all of whom are artists from birth, they probably inherited this artistic talent from her who in her free time, sings and plays the guitar.

How did you begin your career with the newspaper?
With some pauses I’ve been working here for almost 18 years. There I have grown in all aspects, from local and classified sales and customer service.
What was the hardest thing to do to balance work with motherhood?
For me there was never anything I could not balance, I have the great blessing to work with an excellent mother who is my boss and who has always offered me support in regards to the time I need with my children, school, doctors, etc. It is a blessing to work with her.
What is the meaning of Mother’s Day for you?
I come from a mother who has been everything for me, Mother’s Day is the most powerful day in the universe.
How do you celebrate?
With my mother and my children. The perfect celebration is to be with my mother and my children on that very special day, it doesn’t matter where, just enjoy them to the max.
What is the most important thing you have taught your children?
The most important thing I taught my children is values, to enjoy life day by day with responsibility and happiness.

El Día de las Madres: El día más poderoso del universo
“Vengo de una madre que ha sido todo para mi”, dice, con la energía que la caracteriza, “el día de las madres es el día más poderoso del universo” y así mismo lo celebra, Pamela Smith, es la voz al otro lado del teléfono de El Latino, Pamela es la encargada del departamento de Clasificados y representante de ventas de El Latino y Celebrando Latinas. Pamela es la feliz madre de tres hijos Matthew, Max y Mercy, todos artistas de nacimiento, probablemente el talento artístico lo heredaron de ellas porque en sus ratos libres canta y toca la guitarra.
A Pamela no le fue difícil trabajar y hacerse cargo de sus hijos, “nunca hubo nada que no pudiera compaginar, tengo la dicha de trabajar con una excelente mamá que es mi jefa y siempre me ofreció apoyo en lo que respecta al tiempo con mis hijos, escuela, doctores, es una bendición trabajar con ella”.
Para Pamela la celebración perfecta es estar con su madre y con sus hijos”, no importa en donde solamente disfrutarlos a lo máximo”.
Responsabilidad y felicidad son dos de las cosas que Smith le enseño desde pequeños a su hijos de 28, 25 y 21 años respectivamente.
Para Pamela lo más importante de ser madre es : “apoyar a sus hijos en sus sueños, no importa que se crea que no se puede alcanzar, Todo en la vida es posible con perseverancia”.

Con algunas pausas he trabajado con El Latino por casi 18 años, aquí me he desenvuelto en todos los ambitos, desde ventas locales y clasificados y servicio al cliente.

Para mi nunca hubo nada que no se pudiera compaginar, tengo la dicha de trabajar con una excelente mamá que es mi jefa y que siempre me ofreció apoyo en lo que respecta tiempos con mis hijos, escuela, doctores, etc. Es una bendición trabajar con ella.
¿Qué significado tiene el día de las madres para tí?
Vengo de una madre que ha sido todo para mi, el día de las madres es el día más poderoso del universo.
¿Còmo lo celebran?
Con mi madre y con mis hijos. La celebración perfecta es estar con mi madre y mis hijos ese día tan especial, no importa en donde. solamente disfrutarlos a lo máximo.

Lo más importante que yo les he enseñado a mis hijos son los valores y que disfruten la vida día con día con responsabilidad y felicidad.

Being a mom is a learning journey every day!
Sometimes it’s hard to explain with words all the emotions that our children create in us, this is what happened to Diana Cervantes, mom to Alejandro, Camilo and Luna of 14, 15 and 9 years of age, “my kids give me joy, ease my fears and also give me all the energy to do everything for them”. For Diana, being a mom is a learning journey every day, “children teach you so many things, they don’t realize it and yet, every day you learn something from them.
‘’Mother’s Day is a day where you can reflect on the lessons learned because being a mom is not an easy task but it is the best that task that I have had to do”.
How did you start your journalism career?
Wow, it was in 1994, I was in college and I knew that one of my teachers worked independently with El Latino newspaper, so I approached her seeking an opportunity, she put me in contact with Fanny Miller and shortly thereafter I was already learning everything there is to learn in journalism and I dare say a much more.
What was the hardest thing to do to balance work and motherhood?
I am so grateful to God for the great mother he gave me, she took care of my two oldest children, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without her, on top of having the great fortune of working in a company where my children and me have always been treated like family.
What is the meaning of Mother’s Day for you?
It is a very meaningful day full of memories. It is a day where I stop to think and reflect above all about all that my mother has been for me and what I want to be for my children.
How do you celebrate?
Since I was a little girl I would save my money to have enough money to buy something special for my mom. I loved seeing her face as I surprised her with a present from me. I still do it. Now I celebrate May 10th (Mexican Mother’s Day) and I always look for something to do that makes her feel special, and with my children I celebrate the second Sunday of the month (American Mother’s Day), everything starts early with a breakfast that they prepare with the help of their dad and the whole day goes on with special surprises.
What is the most important thing that you have taught your children?
To have empathy with others. I try to help them learn to put themselves in the shoes of others, to help each other and to try and understand them.

Ser mamá un apredizaje de todos los días
A veces es difícil explicar con palabras todos los sentimientos que generan los hijos, esto le pasa a Diana Cervantes madre de Alejandro, Camilo y Luna de 14, 15 y 9 años, “Me faltarían calificativos para decir lo que los hijos provocan en uno, a mí mis hijos me dan alegría, tranquilizan mis miedos y también me dan la energía necesaria para luchar por ellos”.
Para Diana ser mamá es un diario aprendizaje, “los hijos te enseñan tantas cosas, no se dan cuentan y sin embargo, todos los días aprendes algo de ellos”.
El día de las madres es un día en el que se puede recapitular lo aprendido y es que ser mamá no es una tarea fácil pero si la mejor que me ha tocado hacer”.
¿Cómo empezaste tu carrera en el periódico?
Uy, fue en 1994, estaba estudiando la universidad, yo sabía que una de mis maestras trabajaba en El Latino, así que me acerque a ella buscando una oportunidad, ella me puso en contacto con Fanny Miller y al poco tiempo ya estaba aprendiendo todo lo que en una redacción se aprende y diría yo que mucho más.
¿Qué fue lo más difícil de compaginar el trabajo con ser madre?
Gracias a Dios por la gran madre que me dió, ella se encargaba de atender a mis dos hijos mayores, no habría podido sin ella, además de tener la fortuna de trabajar en una empresa en la que tanto a mí como a mis hijos los han tratado siempre como de la familia.
¿Qué significado tiene el día de las madres para tí?
Es un día en el que me detengo a pensar y reflexionar sobre todo lo que mi madre ha sido para mí y lo que yo quiero ser para mis hijos.
¿Cómo lo celebran?
Desde que era niña juntaba mi dinero para comprarle algo especial a mami. Me gustaba ver la cara de sorpresa cuando abría su regalo. Lo sigo haciendo. Con mi mamá los festejos son el 10 de mayo y con mis hijos celebramos el segundo domingo del mes, todo comienza muy temprano con desayuno que preparan con ayuda de su papá y el día sigue así lleno de sorpresas especiales.
¿Qué es lo más importante que les has enseñado a tus hijos?
A tener empatía con los demás. Intento que aprendan a ponerse en los zapatos del otro, que se ayuden entre sí y que traten de comprender a sus semejantes.
